Renewal: Licenses renew annually on or before December 31 each year (G.S. 90-155); CE is earned per calendar year. The Board emails renewal instructions on or before December 1. A license that is not renewed is placed on inactive status on January 30 of the following year (21 NCAC 10 .0204(c)).

Reporting
CE is reported through the Board's CE Broker portal (linked from the Board website); the Board does not award credit until the sponsor or licentiate submits the certificate of attendance or course completion.
Grace period
Licenses not renewed by December 31 may be renewed until the license is placed on inactive status on January 30 of the following year; a $25 reinstatement fee applies (G.S. 90-155; 21 NCAC 10 .0204(c), (j)). Hardship waivers of CE must be requested in writing by December 15.

North Carolina licentiates must obtain 18 hours (2 days; one 'day' equals 9 hours per G.S. 90-155) of Board-approved CE each calendar year (21 NCAC 10 .0204(e), amended eff. 1/1/2024). At least 10 hours must be in-person or live online with real-time instructor interaction; as many as 8 hours may be obtained in the manner set forth in Rule .0210. Hardship waivers (undue hardship: protracted medical illness, natural disaster, extended absence from the U.S.) require written application by December 15; military members get a matching CE extension.
