Details

Virginia licenses CRNAs as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (CRNA is a recognized APRN category; Rx authority attaches by operation of law). Per 18VAC90-30-105, an APRN initially licensed on or after May 8, 2002 renews by holding current professional certification in the area of specialty practice — no CE hours required. APRNs licensed before May 8, 2002 may instead complete at least 40 hours of CE in the specialty area approved by a designated certifying agency or ACCME. Renewal is governed by 18VAC90-30-100. Whether the 8-hour pharmacology CE requirement for prescriptive authority (18VAC90-40-55) applies to the CRNA category, which holds Rx authority by operation of law rather than a designated prescriptive-authority license, is not clear from the Board's published materials. National track (all states): NBCRNA Continued Professional Certification (CPC), now branded MAC (Maintaining Anesthesia Certification), requires 60 Class A (MAC Ed, assessed/prior-approved CE) + 40 Class B (MAC Dev, professional development) credits per 4-year cycle, plus quarterly MAC Check knowledge checks and 2-year check-ins.
