Details

California licenses CRNAs via the RN license plus national certification; the Board of Registered Nursing issues nurse anesthetist 'Advanced Practice Certificates,' not a separate APRN license, so the RN renewal requirement applies. RNs must complete 30 contact hours of CE every two years through a BRN-approved provider (California Code of Regulations, Title 16, section 1451). No mandatory topic sub-requirements apply to CRNAs (the gerontology/dementia carve-out applies only to primary-care NPs serving older populations). National track (all states): NBCRNA Continued Professional Certification (CPC), now branded MAC (Maintaining Anesthesia Certification), requires 60 Class A (MAC Ed, assessed/prior-approved CE) + 40 Class B (MAC Dev, professional development) credits per 4-year cycle, plus quarterly MAC Check knowledge checks and 2-year check-ins. Excess Class A credits may count toward Class B. A practicing CRNA must satisfy BOTH the NBCRNA program and the state license requirement above.
