South Carolina's APRN competency requirement for renewal is an updated/current national certification (per SC Board of Nursing renewal FAQs); CRNAs must maintain NBCRNA certification. The FAQ's 20-hour pharmacotherapeutics requirement (including 2 hours on controlled substances) applies only to APRNs with prescriptive authority; South Carolina prescriptive authority is issued to nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, and clinical nurse specialists, not CRNAs, so it does not apply to CRNA license renewal. APRN licenses expire April 30 of even-numbered years. Note on national certification: In addition to state renewal requirements, CRNAs must maintain national certification/recertification through the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA). The NBCRNA mandates 60 Class A credits, 40 Class B credits, Core Modules, and 850 hours of clinical practice every 4 years to maintain certification.
