Rhode Island licenses CRNAs as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses and requires 10 contact hours of CE per two-year cycle, including 2 hours related to substance abuse; licensees must also maintain national certification and attest to CE completion at renewal (records retained four years). A one-hour Alzheimer's disease training is required once per career, not each cycle. Licenses expire March 1 every other year; one six-month hardship extension may be granted. APRNs with prescriptive authority have additional pharmacology requirements (e.g., 30 hours of pharmacology every 6 years) that attach to the prescriptive-authority recognition, not the base APRN license. Note on national certification: In addition to state renewal requirements, CRNAs must maintain national certification/recertification through the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA). The NBCRNA mandates 60 Class A credits, 40 Class B credits, Core Modules, and 850 hours of clinical practice every 4 years to maintain certification.
