New York does not issue a separate CRNA/APRN license; per NYSED, New York's four nursing professions are Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Professional Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, and Clinical Nurse Specialist, so CRNAs practice and renew as Registered Professional Nurses. The nursing license itself is valid for life, but the registration certificate authorizing practice must be renewed every three years (the initial renewal period is adjusted so it ends in the month before the licensee's birth month). New York does not impose a general CE-hour total for nursing; mandated training applies: NYSED-approved infection control coursework every four years and child abuse reporting coursework (a RN licensure requirement; NYSED requires completion of the updated child-abuse training curriculum by November 17, 2026). Nurses with a DEA registration must complete 3 contact hours every 3 years in pain management, palliative care, and addiction (Public Health Law section 3309-a). Note on national certification: In addition to state renewal requirements, CRNAs must maintain national certification/recertification through the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA). The NBCRNA mandates 60 Class A credits, 40 Class B credits, Core Modules, and 850 hours of clinical practice every 4 years to maintain certification.
