New Mexico licenses CRNAs directly as Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (16.12.17.15 NMAC, effective 1/1/2026). APRN renewal is biennial by the end of the licensee's renewal (birth) month; the general rule requires 30 hours of CE within the 24 months before expiration (16.12.17.9), but for CRNAs NBCRNA recertification is accepted for meeting the mandatory CE requirements, and CRNAs must maintain NBCRNA certification with a recertification card presented at each renewal (16.12.17.15(H)). CRNAs with a DEA registration at any time during the renewal period must obtain 5 contact hours in the management of non-cancer pain. The initial CRNA license is valid until the last day of the applicant's birth month after the first anniversary of initial licensure. Note on national certification: In addition to state renewal requirements, CRNAs must maintain national certification/recertification through the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA). The NBCRNA mandates 60 Class A credits, 40 Class B credits, Core Modules, and 850 hours of clinical practice every 4 years to maintain certification.
