Details

Iowa licenses CRNAs as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs). Renewal requires 36 contact hours per 3-year period; current national certification or recertification related to nursing practice is recognized as all 36 hours (481 IAC 619.2(3)h). Up to 18 excess hours may carry forward to the next period; documentation must be retained 4 years and is subject to audit. Mandatory reporter training (child and/or dependent adult abuse identification and reporting) is required at renewal only for licensees who regularly examine, attend, counsel, or treat children or adults in Iowa — conditional, not a universal CRNA category. National track (all states): NBCRNA Continued Professional Certification (CPC), now branded MAC (Maintaining Anesthesia Certification), requires 60 Class A (MAC Ed, assessed/prior-approved CE) + 40 Class B (MAC Dev, professional development) credits per 4-year cycle, plus quarterly MAC Check knowledge checks and 2-year check-ins. Excess Class A credits may count toward Class B. A practicing CRNA must satisfy BOTH the NBCRNA program and the state license requirement above.
