Hawaii LPNs must complete one of the board's learning-activity options (HRS 457-9.3) per biennium; 30 contact hours of continuing education is the CE route shown here. Alternatives include national certification, a board-approved refresher course, academic credit, precepting, research, publication, a presentation, or a board-recognized nurse residency program. Nurses who graduated or completed pre-licensure requirements within 12 months before the renewal date are exempt from continuing competency for that first renewal (HRS 457-9.2(b)); those 12-24 months post-graduation need 15 contact hours before the first renewal.
