Alabama Optometry (OD) CE requirements

Renewal: License renewal opens Oct 1 each year; license must be renewed by Dec 31 (license expires Dec 31). CE compliance period is Oct 1–Sep 30 (Alabama fiscal year); CE not completed by Sep 30 must be completed during the Oct 1–Dec 31 re-licensure period — you may not renew until all CE is complete (Board CE notice, optometry.alabama.gov/ContEd.htm).

20 hours apply to therapeutic licensees (approved to use therapeutic pharmaceutical agents); nontherapeutic optometrists need 14 hours annually. Max 3 hours of distance-based (internet/teleconference) CE and max 3 hours of practice-management CE per year. No carry-over of CE hours between years. CE must be COPE/AOA/AlaOA/other state association/accredited school or college of optometry/Southern Council of Optometry/American Academy of Optometry approved or offered; all other courses must be submitted for Board approval. Keep a personal record of courses attended (dates, course name, sponsor, clock hours). Rule: Ala. Admin. Code 630-X-7-.02 and -.03.
