Tennessee Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) CE category requirements

Tennessee licenses CRNAs as APRNs (nurse anesthetists included in TCA 63-7-126). Per Board Rule 1000-04-.05, to renew/hold the APRN credential the nurse must biennially renew the TN RN license (Rule 1000-01-.03) and demonstrate RN competency (Rule 1000-01-.14), and must have obtained or maintained national certification in the specialty area during the most recent biennial renewal period — no state CE hours are otherwise required. An APRN holding a Certificate of Fitness (prescriptive authority) must complete 2 contact hours of CE on controlled substance prescribing practices, including the TN Department of Health treatment guidelines on opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and carisoprodol. National track (all states): NBCRNA Continued Professional Certification (CPC), now branded MAC (Maintaining Anesthesia Certification), requires 60 Class A (MAC Ed, assessed/prior-approved CE) + 40 Class B (MAC Dev, professional development) credits per 4-year cycle, plus quarterly MAC Check knowledge checks and 2-year check-ins. Excess Class A credits may count toward Class B. A practicing CRNA must satisfy BOTH the NBCRNA program and the state license requirement above.
