Virginia Clinical Social Worker CE requirements

Renewal: Licenses renew June 30 each year, but LCSWs must document the full 30 contact hours prior to renewal in even-numbered years only (e.g., CE earned 07/01/2024 to 06/30/2026 for the 06/30/2026 renewal). Newly licensed individuals are exempt from documenting CE on the first renewal following initial licensure.

Minimum 30 contact hours of CE for biennial renewal in even years, directly related to social work or another behavioral health field; at least 6 hours must pertain to ethics, the standards of practice for the behavioral health professions, or laws governing the practice of social work in Virginia. Up to 2 hours may be earned through delivery of social work services. Inactive status is available at one-half the annual renewal fee; practice requires a current active license.
