80 approved CE hours in the APRN specialty per 2-year cycle: a minimum of 50 hours in formal CE programs (including the 20 pharmacotherapeutics hours above), and a maximum of 30 hours from presentations, evidence-based practice or quality-improvement projects, publications, research, or precepting. The 1-hour cultural competency training (repeated every 6 years), 1-hour implicit bias awareness training, and 1-hour sexual harassment prevention training count within the 80 and do not add hours. Conditional extras (each counts within the 80): a 1-hour Alzheimer's/dementia course for APRNs with direct patient interaction with adults 26+; mandated reporter training every 6 years for those working with children; 3 hours of safe opioid prescribing practices for prescribers holding Controlled Substances Registrations. The first renewal of an Illinois APRN license is exempt from CE. National track (all states): NBCRNA Continued Professional Certification (CPC), now branded MAC (Maintaining Anesthesia Certification), requires 60 Class A (MAC Ed, assessed/prior-approved CE) + 40 Class B (MAC Dev, professional development) credits per 4-year cycle, plus quarterly MAC Check knowledge checks and 2-year check-ins. Excess Class A credits may count toward Class B. A practicing CRNA must satisfy BOTH the NBCRNA program and the state license requirement above.
