New Jersey certificates are generally permanent rather than periodically renewed, but employed teachers' individualized Professional Development Plans must include at least 20 qualifying hours each year, prorated for part-time employment or absence. Modeled as 20 hours per 1-year cycle — this is not a credential-expiration cycle. Native unit is qualifying PD hours. Added 2026-09-30: N.J.S.A. 18A:6-112 requires 2 hours of suicide prevention instruction per 5-year professional development period for all teaching staff (NJDOE state-required PD guidance).
