New Jersey requires 30 contact hours per two-year renewal period, including 1 hour on prescription opioid drugs (alternatives to opioids and the risks and signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion), per the official Board of Nursing Continuing Education FAQ and N.J.A.C. 13:37-5.3. Up to 15 excess hours may carry over to the next period; the Board audits compliance and the CE rules apply to active licenses. A one-time 1 hour on organ and tissue donation and recovery also applies (conditional; the one-time category rests on secondary summaries rather than the Board FAQ text reviewed). Separately, 2020 New Jersey legislation (P.L.2021, c.79) requires one credit of explicit/implicit-bias training for nurses who provide perinatal treatment and care to pregnant persons. Licenses expire May 31 biennially, with odd/even years following the initial issuance year (uniformly reported in Board renewal guidance summaries).
