Required categories

Gerontology, care of the older patient, or end-of-life care — 6 of the RN's 30 hours, required only when more than 25% of the NP's patient or client population is 65 years or older (16 CCR §1456(c))

California imposes no NP-specific CE beyond the RN 30-hour requirement; the 6-hour gerontology provision is a conditional allocation within the RN 30 hours, not additional hours. National certification is not required for standard NP certificate renewal (103/104 independent-practice NPs maintain national certification separately under AB 890). The initial license lasts two birthdays, expiring the last day of the month following the birth date, then renews every two years.
